Everyone wants their kid to have the perfect first birthday, right? I definitely did! I had everything planned, down to the candles on the cupcakes. Unfortunately, life threw a wrench in our plans because I’d forgotten to check a cake mix for something my daughter is allergic to. That meant back to the drawing board at the last minute!
There were two things that saved the day: my best friend, who went on a heroic journey to find the perfect cake mix, and the Sift app. I had gotten an email a bit earlier about trying the Sift app for my gluten-free diet. I asked if I could add a dairy free filter as well, because my daughter is allergic to milk! Sift was kind enough to let me try out both filters in exchange for my honest opinion.
While my friend was hunting down a cake mix and frosting, I realized that I somehow hadn’t checked a few of the main foods we were serving at the party for allergens. Normally I am on the ball about this, so I totally understand you judging me. I get it. What kind of celiac even am I?
When we went to the store to pick up a few last minute items, I was stressed to the MAX, y’all. Everything had to be perfect, and it had to be….not poisonous. Reading the labels on everything can be time-consuming, especially since I have terrible vision. With Sift, I just have to scan the bar code of the product and bam! The ingredients are “sifted” into categories for easy viewing. And at the top? It tells you if the food is compliant with your purchased diets!
A few items I’ve scanned have ingredients that Sift hasn’t been able to categorize, but overall, this makes my life a lot easier. Plus, Sift seems to be improving every day– and has added new stuff just in the two weeks I’ve been using it!
When I first agreed to try Sift, there wasn’t a soy free diet option available. Now, soy free is one of the eight diets offered at the time of writing. I’ll be buying soy free in the future because it’s my daughter’s other major allergen! Each diet filter costs $2.99. This is a one time fee, so you’ll have access to this filter as long as you use the app.
As of now, Sift Food Labels is available for both Apple and Android in the USA. Sift Food Labels app is not currently available in the U.K. The company doesn’t currently have plans to expand to the U.K., but you can always hold out hope for the future!
Although the Sift app is a time-saver for anyone with a restricted diet, it seems especially helpful for people who are new to their restricted diet or who have multiple food allergies/intolerances in their household. That’s why I went ahead and purchased the soy free filter! I felt like I was losing a lot of time reading food labels multiple times to make sure that I hadn’t missed anything. You know, like oats in a cake mix?
If you’re dealing with food allergies or a restricted diet, you should make your life easier and check out Sift Food Labels app. If you do try it out, be sure to come back here and tell me what you thought! Find Sift at their website, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
